Description

A Three-Cell LiFePO4 Pack for a 1A Working Load

This 9.6V 1.6Ah custom LiFePO4 battery pack uses three 18650 cells in a 3S1P arrangement. The rated capacity is 1.6Ah at C5, minimum capacity is 1.5Ah and nominal energy is approximately 15.36Wh.

The blue PVC-wrapped reference pack measures (68 ± 2) × (56.5 ± 2) × (25 ± 2)mm and weighs 150 ± 20g. It uses a shared charge/discharge harness specified with a Molex 5559-4P connector, 18AWG UL1015 wire and a 300 ± 20mm lead. Dimensions exclude the lead and connector.

Electrical Strengths of the 18650 3S1P Build

  • Compact, defined installation size. The body tolerances and 150 ± 20g weight help assess enclosure space and mounting requirements. Allow clearance for the 300mm nominal harness.
  • A specified low-current duty. Working current is no greater than 1A. The separate 1-1.5A entry is limited to five minutes or less.
  • A defined shared-port harness. The connector family, wire gauge, insulation type and lead-length tolerance provide concrete inputs for mating-harness review.
  • Protection and balancing are specified. Overcharge, over-discharge and temperature protection accompany balancing; final protection thresholds must match the approved build.

How This Build Differs from Its Siblings

The 12.8V 4Ah 26650 4S1P pack has a different series count, cell size, voltage and capacity. This 9.6V 3S1P pack is designed around a smaller 15.36Wh energy budget and a working current of no greater than 1A. Select by the host voltage range and measured duty profile.

Duty, Charge and Temperature Limits

  • Discharge profile. Keep normal working demand at or below 1A. The specified 1-1.5A range is limited to five minutes or less and should be reviewed against the actual duty cycle.
  • Charging. Use 10.8 ± 0.15V and no more than 0.8A, with the specified 16-32mA charge cut-off entry. Charge only between 0°C and 45°C.
  • Temperature and storage. Discharge from -20°C to 60°C; provide ventilation above 45°C. Store dry at 0°C to 40°C, preferably 15°C to 25°C.
  • Cycle test conditions. The ≥2000-cycle, ≥80%-retention specification uses standard charge/discharge procedures at 25 ± 2°C and 65 ± 20% RH, with 0.5-1 hour rests. The C5 reference current is 0.32A.
  • System connection. The specification prohibits series or parallel connection of complete packs.

Connecting the Molex 5559-4P Shared-Port Lead

Charging and discharging use the same connector. The harness is specified as 18AWG UL1015 wire, 300 ± 20mm long, with red positive and black negative. The source does not assign individual contact numbers for the four-position connector.

  1. Check the Molex 5559-4P housing, mating part and connector orientation against the approved harness drawing.
  2. Confirm contact assignment before connection; use the red-positive and black-negative wire identification together with the drawing.
  3. Route the 300 ± 20mm lead without pulling on the PVC wrap, and provide strain relief.
  4. Connect only a compatible load and a charger matched to the 10.8 ± 0.15V charging requirement.

Devices That Match This Discharge Profile

Potential applications include low-current portable instruments, monitoring devices, control electronics and compact lighting assemblies designed for a three-series LiFePO4 supply.
